The Power of Community

Community is a powerful subject—one we need to talk about more often, especially as so many people today feel disconnected.

A healthy community is built around a shared purpose or belief. It’s a space where people feel valued, supported, and truly connected. There’s a sense of belonging—a place where thoughts can be shared openly and people feel accepted. Maybe you’re part of a ladies’ group, a tennis club, or an organization you’ve belonged to for years. If so, you’ve likely stayed because of the deep connections you’ve formed, and because that sense of community has become essential to your overall well-being.

Over the past thirty years or more, many communities have broken down. This fragmentation has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. With that in mind, here are five signs you may be part of a toxic community:

  1. Constant negativity—complaining, nitpicking, judgment, and a lack of appreciation—creating an environment you begin to dread.

  2. Walking on eggshells due to secretiveness, rampant gossip, backstabbing, and a lack of transparency, leaving members feeling unsafe and unsupported.

  3. Tolerating offensive language, bullying, or being singled out; dealing with “in-groups” and “out-groups,” or being shut down for disagreeing.

  4. High turnover, with people frequently leaving and not returning calls, while those who stay appear burnt out, unmotivated, or silent because they don’t feel valued.

  5. Fear of making mistakes or speaking up due to punishment, blame-shifting instead of accountability, and bad behavior going unchecked.

Now, let’s compare that with five signs of a healthy community:

  1. A genuine sense of belonging, meaningful connection, and real relationship-building—without everyone glued to their phones.

  2. Welcoming, supportive, and knowledgeable people who remember your name and intentionally create a positive environment.

  3. Shared activities to enjoy together, like a Friday night card game or a Saturday afternoon BBQ, with space for the kids to have fun too.

  4. Clear communication where people feel heard, feedback is welcomed, and issues can be resolved constructively.

  5. A focus on overall well-being—physical, mental, emotional and social—encouraging healthy lifestyles, stress management, and personal growth.

Our power is found in community. When we feel disconnected, life can feel heavier, quieter, and more isolating than it needs to be. If you’re feeling empty or longing for strength, support, and genuine connection, know that you’re not alone—and that community is still waiting for you. Be brave. Take the first step. Step outside, reach out, and allow yourself to be seen. Connection has a way of reminding us who we are, and we are stronger together.
